The men and women’s varsity basketball teams won the 2017-18 Detroit Metro Athletic Conference League Basketball Championships on Saturday at Hope of Detroit Academy.
On the women’s side, the Lady Lakers improved to 19-1 on the season with a convincing 51-14 victory over Cesar Chavez. Junior Christina Sanders led the way with 19 points while freshman Jaida Reese added 16.
Members of the team include; Sanders and Reese, along with senior Alexxis Jenkins, juniors Laniyah Weatherspoon, Jada Parker, Imani Garvin and sophomore Tah’Janay Chapple. The team is coached Peter Pinto and Mar Lisa Braxton.
The ladies will travel to Ecorse on Wednesday night and will play the winner of tonight’s Cesar Chavez/River Rouge game in the semi-finals of the MHSAA Class B District tournament.
The men’s team came in as a heavy underdog to Canton Prep, which finished the league portion of their season at 13-0. That also included a 66-49 victory over the Lakers back in January. None of that would matter as the Lakers would pull of the upset by a score of 47-45. With the win, the Lakers improve to 12-7 on the season.
Sophomore guard Zach Mingo connected on 4 three point baskets en route to 16 points while junior center Anthony Rogers scored 15 and added 8 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Sophomore Jamari Jackson added 11.
The men’s team also includes; seniors Wellington Bryant and Davon Russ along with junior Willie Laidler and sophomores Derell Price, Jujuan Slaughter and Kelly McMurray. The team is coached by Myron Brown.
The team returns to action on Tuesday night against Old Redford and will travel to Ecorse to play the Red Raiders on Monday March 5th in MHSAA District play.
