The Varsity Football team playing in their first ever varsity game as a program opened their season with a convincing 38-18 victory over Star International Academy in Dearborn Heights on Thursday night.
The offense got started early for the Lakers as they scored a touchdown on their first offensive play ever after the defense set them up with the ball on the 1 yard line. Senior QB Zach Mingo was able to sneak the ball in and the Lakers led 8-0 after a successful 2-point conversion.
The Lakers would go onto to score two more times in quarter. Junior RB Morris Briggs would score from 21 yards out and Mingo would add another score on a 29 yard run.
In the 2nd quarter, the Lakers would string together a 7 play drive that resulted in a 3 yard Mingo pass to TE Tariq Harris. The conversion failed, but that would give the team a commanding 26-0 lead. Star would score with :55 seconds remaining in the half and the Lakers led 26-6 at halftime.
Any chance the Falcons thought they would have in the game were quickly dashed as Briggs would score again, this time on a 65 yard run. That would push the lead to 32-6 at the end of three quarters.
Star would strike quickly early in the 4th quarter on a 46 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 32-12. The Lakers were able to answer with a quick score of the own as they put together an efficient 3 play, 55 yard drive that resulted in a 29 yard scamper by junior RB Jaylin Gilmore. That made the score 38-12. The Falcons would add a meaningless TD late in the game that made the final score 38-18.
Briggs led the Lakers in rushing with 12 carries for 119 yards and two scores. Gilmore added 81 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Mingo threw for a score and ran for two others. On the defensive side of the ball; Briggs recorded 9 tackles and Mingo added 5 to go with an interception while Cedric Andrews added 5 tackles and 2 sacks.
The Lakers (1-0) will travel to Cardinal Mooney (1-0) on Saturday to play the Cardinals at East China Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 1 pm.
