While the last year has proved to be anything but normal, the boys varsity basketball team continued their normal by winning their 4th straight Detroit Metro Athletic Conference (DMAC) basketball championship by defeating Jalen Rose Leadership Academy 76-72 in OT on Wednesday night.
The Lakers fell behind by 13 points early and trailed by 6 at the end of the 1st quarter 19-13, but would rally to take a 31-27 halftime lead over the Jaguars. Junior guard Jayden Williams provided his usual spark off the bench.
The 2nd half would prove to be exciting as the two teams exchanged leads. JRLA would outscore the home team by 5 in the 3rd quarter and take a 1 point lead into the 4th. The Lakers were able to take the lead early in the quarter on two deep triples from Williams, but would ultimately need a driving layup by junior Kyle Germany with 3 seconds left to tie the game at 64 and force overtime.
In OT, JRLA would jump out to an early 5 point lead (69-64) before the Lakers would counter again with a 12-3 run that would provide the final margin of victory.
Williams would lead 5 Lakers in double figures as he poured in 20 points. He would add 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Junior Edward Woods would score 12 points and grabbed 6 boards while junior Armon Parker scored 12 and grabbed 7 rebounds. Germany finished with 11 points and 6 assists and junior Chris Boler scored 10.
In the JV game, the Lakers would fall to JRLA 54-46. Derreaun Polk scored 22 points in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Friday night when they will welcome our friends from the Detroit Public School League, Detroit Cody. The JV game is set for 5:00 pm with the varsity to follow.
